The Spiritual Journey
Spirituality encourages us to understand ourselves and seek the deeper purpose of human life.
Our everyday lives are filled with responsibilities, relationships, ambitions and challenges. A spiritual way of life does not require us to abandon these responsibilities. Instead, it encourages us to fulfil them honestly and responsibly while also giving time to our spiritual development.
The spiritual approach of the Dera emphasizes meditation, satsang, sewa, humility, compassion, truthful and ethical living, love and respect for humanity, and a responsible family and social life.
Spiritual understanding should ultimately be reflected in the way we live and in the way we treat others.
The Inner Journey
Meditation is an important part of spiritual life. Much of our attention is normally directed towards the activities, responsibilities, desires and concerns of the external world. Meditation provides an opportunity to become still and direct our attention inward.
Regular spiritual practice encourages discipline, patience and inner awareness. The purpose of spiritual teachings is not simply to acquire knowledge about spirituality but to put those teachings sincerely into practice.
Gathering for Spiritual Understanding
Satsang provides an opportunity for the Sangat to gather and reflect upon spiritual teachings. Through satsang, seekers are encouraged to understand the importance of meditation, humility, compassion, sewa and spiritual living while continuing to fulfil their responsibilities in everyday life.
At present, 24 designated annual satsangs are held at Radha Soami Satsang Jhammat. Members of the Sangat from India and abroad visit the Dera to participate in these gatherings.
Designated satsangs provide an opportunity to listen to spiritual discourses, deepen one's understanding of spiritual teachings, practise meditation and participate in sewa. Dates and information concerning upcoming designated satsangs are published in the Sewa & Announcements section.
Selfless Service
Sewa means selfless service performed without seeking personal recognition or reward. It has always been an important part of life at Radha Soami Satsang Jhammat.
Members of the Sangat voluntarily contribute their time, effort and abilities towards the activities of the Dera. This may include helping during satsangs, assisting the Sangat, maintaining the Dera and participating in activities undertaken for the welfare of others.
Sewa encourages humility and reminds us that spiritual principles should be reflected in our actions. Every sincere act of service provides an opportunity to practise compassion, cooperation and humility.
